About

Pride and Prejudice – An Adaptation in Words and Music.

Pride and Prejudice, an adaptation in words and music is the theatrical retelling of Jane Austen’s most famous work. The enduring story of the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy is presented in an intimate drawing-room setting, in much the same way that Jane herself first read the story aloud to the Austen family and their closest friends.

Film, television and stage icon, Nadine Garner brings to life Austen’s most famous manuscript with a sublime musical accompaniment. Weaving around Austen’s own words is Carl Davis' magical score from the much-loved BBC TV drama series of Pride and Prejudice, widely considered the most seminal television adaptation of the author’s work.

Joining Nadine on stage will be Madeleine Easton, the Australian musician who enthralled a televised audience of 400 million people with solo performances at the coronation of King Charles III.

Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Melvyn Tan joins us for all performances to Sunday 25 August. The Singaporean born child prodigy moved to London aged twelve to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School before an in-demand career performing at the world’s most prestigious venues including Royal Festival Hall and New York’s Lincoln Centre.

For the final week of the season we welcome Australia’s next generation, rising star concert pianist Dan Le. Having already enjoyed an international career spanning four continents, he has been described as an incredibly versatile soloist, chamber musician and innovative artist. Melbourne born Dan was hailed by the New York Concert Review as a “brilliant young pianist.”

Pride and Prejudice is arguably the greatest romance novel of the English Language. More than 200 years after her death, Jane Austen’s work continues to resonate with every new generation. It is fitting that much loved Australian actor Nadine Garner will honour this legacy in a unique but faithful production promising captivating entertainment. laugh-out-loud moments and wonderful surprises.

    A wonderful afternoon in Meryton

by Jannie on 25/8/24Sydney Opera House- Playhouse - Sydney

This was a delightful experience. It opened with music by composers who who would have been heard in the period at the close of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, including Moart, Schubert and Beethoven, The musicians, a male pianist and a femalie violinist, were excellent. The violinist gave an interesting talk on Jane Austen and the social mores of the period. After the interval Nadine Garner did an excellent job as a reader of the novel, which had been cleverly condensed to fit into the time but to include all salient points. The set design was very good and the use of the picture frames to highlight certain characters very effective. The performance was very well received by the (mostly female) audience and appeared to be sold out. It inspired my husband and me to watch he DVD of the latest BBC version which he had never seen but thoroughly enjoyed.

    Unmissable

    by Shaz on 24/8/24

This was a truly delightful show! The musical first act provided a taster, with talented musicians setting the stage and transporting the audience with their renaissance classics and entertaining back stories. It was in Act 2, however, from the moment Garner’s first appeared with the familiar opening lines, that the stage truly came to life. Garner provided mesmerising characterisations, with her magical summary of the Jane Austen classic masterfully supported by gorgeous music. This ensured an ear to ear grin remained plastered on my face for the duration of the show. Could not recommended highly enough for both Austenphiles and those that appreciate the magic of great live theatre.

Music was sensational. We were transported back 200 yrs to a time of balls & parties, romance and entertainment of every kind. To add to such beauty, the telling of a timeless treasured story by a fabulous narrator. Full of drama, humour, vanity, Pride and Prejudice! DELIGHTFUL!

Very Enjoyable for this Austen Tragic

by Ethel on 16/8/24Sydney Opera House- Playhouse - Sydney

I really didn't know what to expect, despite reading the write-up before I bought the ticket. The first half introduced us to the musicians and the lovely music. The second half was a brief summary of the classic story, brilliantly acted out (a one-woman act!) with such good humour. I highly recommend.

A very interesting and enjoyable adaption of P&P. The music and musicians were brilliant and Nadine Garner's storytelling brought the classic back to life. Stage and props mastefully used to embellish the acting. Well worth a lovely night out.
